As Girl Scouts we have a great concern for the environment. Our Girl Scout Law tells us to "use our resources wisely" and “make the world a better place.” When you take your girls camping, the impact you make on the land can help preserve it for others or lead it to destruction. It is hoped that you will set a positive example for others to follow.
Considerations:
1. Let nature’s sounds prevail. Avoid loud voices and noises.
2. Buy food that has minimal packaging.
3. Cooking should be done on a camp stove as much as possible. It is cleaner, faster, safer and more convenient than cooking on a wood fire.
4. Arrange your site to avoid concentrating activities in the cooking area.
5. Wear footwear with a minimum amount of tread in and around the campsite. Heavy-soled shoes have a great impact on the ground cover.
6. Recycle your trash. Separate recyclable items and take them home. Put other trash in appropriate receptacles.
7. Use washable items for food; i.e., cups, plates, knives, forks, spoons, etc. Use biodegradable soap for cleanup and scatter strained dishwater.
8. Do not use green wood for anything. Use down wood for fire, if necessary. Make your toasting sticks of heavy gauge wire or other similar material. (If using coat hangers, remove the coating first by either a chemical strip or burn off.)
9. Do not disturb wildlife. Look but don't touch. Do not pick wildflowers.
Take nothing but pictures. Leave nothing but footprints!
