LET'S PLAN A CAMPING TRIP

SEASON PRIOR TO CAMPING TRIP 

·    Talk about when and where to camp, reserve site.
·    Plan and discuss expectations of adults and girls, goals of trip, and the need for flexibility.
·    Check Safety-Wise standards and activity checkpoints that relate to camping and outdoor activities -- follow them!
 
SIX WEEKS BEFORE THE TRIP
 
·     Discuss low impact camping concerns.
·     Plan the program activities with your girls.
·     Do some activities to prepare (take a walk, pack a picnic lunch, etc.).
 
FIVE WEEKS BEFORE THE TRIP
 
·         Practice simple outdoor skills.
·         Make something for the trip (dunk bag, sit-upon, etc.).
·         "Fine tune" your program plan ...expect good and bad weather.
·         Make fire starters.
 
 
FOUR WEEKS BEFORE THE TRIP
 
·         Review simple first aid --- ticks, rabies, sun concerns, hypothermia, etc.
·         Explain importance of buddy system.
·         Review troop equipment list -- acquire needed items -- repair those in need.
·         Teach how to make a bedroll to those who don't have a sleeping bag.
·         Plan kaper chart with the girls.
·         Contact any visitors (clergy, program specialist, etc.)
·         Discuss what the girls should pack and how.
 
THREE WEEKS BEFORE THE TRIP
 
·         Teach songs and games for out-of-doors.
·         Review camp guidelines, outdoor good manners.
·         Prepare first aid kit suitable for camp – compile emergency phone numbers for site.
·         Plan flag ceremonies, Girl Scouts’ Own, non-denominational service, etc.
 
TWO WEEKS BEFORE THE TRIP
 
·         Meet with parents – review program – arrange for an emergency contact person.
·         Plan menus and shopping list.
·         Review packing list with girls – do they have everything?
·         Review site rules, regulations, and environmental concerns.
·         Arrange transportation.
 
 
ONE WEEK BEFORE THE TRIP

 
·         Collect food money – shop with the girls for food – pack by meal – refrigerate perishables.
·         Collect Permission Slips, Health History Forms.
·         Pack troop equipment and supplies.
·         Gather program supplies – pack.
·         Remind everyone of appropriate clothing for the weather.
·         Reinforce health and safety concerns.
 
AFTER TRIP
 
·         Evaluation of camping trip by girls and adults.
